Kerala Governor Suspends Vice Chancellor of Veterinary University Following Student’s Death

The Governor of Kerala, Arif Mohammed Khan, has taken action against the Vice Chancellor of the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Dr MR Saseendranath, in connection with the tragic death of a second-year student at the university.

The student, identified as JS Siddharth, was found hanging in his hostel room at the Government Veterinary College, Pookode, Thiruvananthapuram, on February 18.

In his order of suspension, Governor Khan cited a report that indicated severe negligence on the part of Vice Chancellor Saseendranath during the events leading up to Siddharth’s death.

The Governor has also ordered a judicial probe into the incident, expressing disbelief that such horrific activities could take place on the university campus without anyone being aware.

The post-mortem report revealed that Siddharth had been denied food and drink for over 36 hours, leading Governor Khan to describe the case as a “pure murder, not ragging.”

Furthermore, the Governor raised concerns about the alleged involvement of student organizations, particularly the Students Federation of India (SFI), which reportedly used a hostel as its headquarters for various activities.

He criticised the university for not reporting the matter to the chancellor promptly and highlighted the need for accountability among university authorities.

On March 1, Siddharth’s father, T Jayaprakash, alleged that his son’s death appeared to be a “murder sponsored by the leaders and workers of the SFI.”

Police have arrested six individuals in connection with Siddharth’s death and detained another for questioning. Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan has accused the police of protecting the accused and called for action against teachers allegedly involved in covering up the matter.

Law Minister P Rajeev has promised action against the culprits, regardless of their organizational affiliations. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has directed the state police chief to form a special investigation team to thoroughly examine the student’s death and ensure justice is served.
